Skyline Queenstown Gondola: A Great Way to See Queenstown in A Day

This post has been updated to include our recent visit to the Skyline Queenstown Gondola to include our experience at the Skyline Queenstown Luge and hiked the Ben Lomond Track. Our first visit was in summer and the other in spring.

The beautiful sight of Lake Wakatipu, the colorful houses in Queenstown and the Remarkables mountain range slowly came into view as the Skyline Queenstown Gondola made it’s way uphill. It was amazing.Skyline Gondola The Best Way to See Queenstown in A Day Cable Car

People from all over the world have known Queenstown for adrenaline-rush-filled activities such as bungee jumping, skydiving and paragliding. Although I think that one day I’ll have a go at these activities, I have yet to gather enough courage to put myself up to it. Not yet. With just two days here, I had to find the best way to see this place’s beauty. We had scheduled a trip to Milford sound for the next day so we just had one full day to explore most of Queenstown.

Skyline Queenstown Gondola

I have always been fascinated with cable car rides, so imagine my excitement when I knew there was one in Queenstown, the Skyline Queenstown Gondola. It was early morning when we went on our way up the Queenstown hill via the Gondola. The view going up was breathe-taking. The ride up was exhilarating. The hill seemed pretty steep but it was safe being in the car. I have been on other cable cars before, and this is one definitely one I’d recommend. It wasn’t a long ride but it was worth every beautiful minute. On a smooth-sailing ride, we got to see magnificent views of Lake Wakatipu and the the rest of Queenstown. I wondered what would it be like when we reach the top?Skyline Gondola The Best Way to See Queenstown in A Day Cable Car View

Skyline Queenstown Gondola Complex and Attractions

Just when you thought the adventure has ended, at the top of the Gondola ride is the Skyline Queenstown Gondola complex. The views there were amazing! Also, plenty of activities await: the Skyline Queenstown Luge, mountain biking, hiking on walking trails, paragliding, and even bungee jumping.

One of my favourite stops at the Skyline Queenstown Complex is the Jelly Belly Store. I love jellybeans so it was a delight to pick a few different flavours from the shop! There are also edible jelly bean art displays in the complex that are truly fascinating!

If you’re after a quiet afternoon, here is a café / bar and restaurant at the Skyline Queenstown Complex. They have a lots of great options for food and a great place to relax after doing the many different activities at Bob’s Peak.

Skyline Queenstown Luge

I have been on the Skyline Luge several times in Sentosa Singapore when I used to live there and it’s one of the fun activities that I truly enjoyed. Jon and I didn’t have enough time to do the Luge during our first visit in but we finally had the time to go back and do the luge last year (in time with our hike to Ben Lomond) – it was so amazing! Jon had never been on the luge before so it was exciting to be the “better driver” at least for the first go. To be fair, the luge is very easy to manipulate. It is gravity driven and you just have to push to go forward and pull pack to stop so you have full control over your speed. Changing directions isn’t hard either so anyone can navigate the winding tracks easily!

There are two tracks available at the Skyline Queenstown Luge, the red and the blue track, one slightly more challenging. Both tracks have spectacular views over Queenstown. We had the 3 luge ride passes with our gondola tickets and it was a great decision to go with it as once you’ve done one ride, you’d want to go and do it a few times! Don’t worry, there’s a chairlift up so no need to worry about the uphill tracks!

The Skyline Queenstown Gondola on its own costs NZD$44 for a return trip. The gondola ride with 3 luge rides will set you back $NZD63. Opening hours are 9:00 am – 9:00 pm.

Walking Tracks at Bob’s Peak: Skyline Loop Track and Ben Lomond Track

During our first visit, Jon and I too a stroll around the hill and did the 30-minute Loop Track. One part of the walk was along a track under the shade of pine trees. It was a relaxing escape from the busy streets of Queenstown. We also saw some pretty amazing views along the way. If you have more time there are plenty of other treks that can be done from the Skyline complex.

Last year, we finally got the right window of good weather to do the hike to Ben Lomond. This hike either starts from the bottom of the Tiki Trail which leads up to Bob’s Peak or from the Skyline Queenstown Gondola Complex on Bob’s Peak if you ride the gondola. Starting the hike from Bob’s Peak gave us an hour’s head start to we had enough time to do a few rides on the Skyline Luge after we got back from the hike. Ben Lomond is one of the most best day hikes we’ve done in New Zealand. It’s a bit challenging in spring but the views of snow-capped mountains are well-worth it!

Other Things to Do in Queenstown

There are a lot of activities in Queenstown that will surely blow your mind. It is also easy to spend a few hours just going around the main city with plenty of food options and shops.  Another interesting activity, if you want something more relaxed is a walk by the Lake Wakatipu. We did this short walk and enjoyed the slice of serenity.

Queenstown is a beautiful place that we’d definitely go back to. With many activities to choose from, you’ll surely have the time of your life. In case you don’t know where to start the fun or if you have limited time in Queenstown, do the Skyline Luge Gondola and enjoy the many attractions that await there.
