The balcony in front of our room at Lake Pichola Hotel offered mesmerizing views of Lake Pichola and the City Palace. In the morning, we witnessed the stunning reflections upon the mirror-like lake. At night, we gazed upon the glimmering lights of the City Palace across from our hotel. Jon and I couldn’t think of a better way to appreciate the beauty of Udaipur, one of India’s most romantic cities.

A Warm Welcome
The great hospitality at Lake Pichola Hotel was extended to us instantly upon our arrival. Flower wreaths were placed around our necks and refreshing drinks handed to each of us. We were instantly rejuvenated. The check-in process was a breeze so we immediately got to relax in our beautiful lake-view room.
The owner’s son, Mr. Arjun Shaktaway also met us for breakfast during our stay. It was a pleasure talking to him as he told us a bit more about Lake Pichola Hotel, Udaipur and their family heritage.
Hotel Room with Lake View
In our nearly two years of travelling together, Jon and I learnt that we should never pass the opportunity for a room with a view. In many of the memorable places we visited, our room overlooked either a beach, a lake or the mountains. Lake Pichola Hotel was the perfect choice for Udaipur. The views from our room alone were unbeatable. From our charming balcony, we had front row seats to the lake scene in Udaipur. Can this place be any more romantic?
Our air-conditioned room had a comfortable king size bed, flat screen TV, a dresser and comfy chairs. WiFi was also available in the room.
Breakfast in the Glamorous Durbar Hall (Dining Room)
Many palaces in India have a durbar hall or a royal reception hall. At Lake Pichola Hotel, the extent of the reception area and the dining hall has been designed like a durbar hall. We couldn’t help but be distracted by glittering glass chandeliers, tile mosaics and paintings while we had our breakfast. While this part of the hotel is new, it displayed the typical Rajasthani haveli style.
Buffet-style breakfast is usually served during high season at Lake Pichola Hotel. During our visit in the low season, we were given a variety of breakfast options. The Continental Breakfast was a great choice to start a busy day of sightseeing. It came with cheese omelet, toast, butter and jam, tea and juice. We also tried one of the a la carte breakfast options, we had waffles with chocolate sauce and whipped cream which were so satisfying! Great quality western food is quite hard to find in India. Even Leslie (from Parks and Recreation) will agree those waffles were awesome.
Did I mention the breakfast area also had a patio with stunning lake views?
Swimming Pool and The Upre Restaurant (by 1559 AD)
Life in Udaipur mostly revolves around Lake Pichola. Many restaurants claim they have the best lake view. But do they? Don’t waste your time looking for one as the best side to view the Lake Pichola is across the City Palace. While we didn’t get the chance to sample food at The Upre Restauraunt, we got a sample of the unobstructed panoramic view which makes for a great romantic spot.
Available to guests of the hotel, there is also a swimming pool located at the roof top. Jon and I realized we have been pretty slack with using hotel facilities (we didn’t get to use it). It looked very inviting, though.
Lake Pichola Hotel
Lake Pichola Hotel is owned and managed by descendants of a noble family in Udaipur. The hotel has been around for 35 years but parts of it are much older — it was refurbished from a haveli (traditional, ornately decorated mansion) which is over 180 years old. The rich heritage of Rajasthan is truly admirable and staying in a haveli hotel is a unique experience one must try while in this region of India.
Location: The Romantic City, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India
Lake Pichola Hotel is located in the old part of Udaipur. It is located in a quiet street on the side of the lake that faces the City Palace. After walking around the streets of Udaipur we realized this is the better side of the lake to be staying at as there are less cars and touts in this area. It is easy to go from the hotel to the attractions around the old part of the city. Everything including restaurants and shops are but a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. Walking around is quite pleasant around this part of Rajasthan. Not many stares from locals and the streets are quite tidy.
