Amalfi Coast: A Romantic Day Trip in Italy

Amalfi Coast Romantic Day Trip Italy Europe

Simply stunning! The picturesque scene of the colorful cliff-side towns along rocky mountains which beautifully drape down to the clear blue sea of the Amalfi Coast is a natural wonder in Europe I’ll never forget. Costiera Almafitana is located in the Southwestern region of Campania, Italy and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique Mediterranean landscape.

There are several towns to explore in this area. Each town is unique and worth a good look. However, if you don’t have the time to stay in the Amalfi Coast, it can be done as an easy day trip from Naples.

Sorrento

Although not a part of the Amalfi coast, make sure to check out this coastal town which serves as your entry point if you come from Naples. Feast your eyes upon charming shops that sell ceramics and other souvenirs. Enjoy the day exploring this town with your loved one. Dine in the fancy restaurants or simply share a gelato or nutella crepe from one of the food stands along the way. Look out for lemons! This town is also the origin of the famous drink, Limoncello. If you are looking for some sightseeing, you’re in for a treat as this place offers magnificent views of Mount Vesuvius and the Island of Capri.

Positano

Is this real? It was like having a day dream in wonderland. The intricate details and fascinating pastel colours of shoppes, houses and hotels in this cliff-side town will simply leave you in awe. Walk through small alleys and follow the way down to the beach through narrow stairways. Savour the salty scent of the sea and walk hand in hand along the pebble beach, then look back and admire the beauty of Positano. I didn’t know what to expect when Jon said that I’ll like the place. I didn’t just like the place, I loved it!

This quiet town further down the coast is a bit smaller, and a lot quieter. The houses are also a bit more scattered so you get to appreciate the lush greenery. We stayed in this town to watch the sunset and it was simply mesmerizing. We also went for a walk around the coast just outside of town – it was great to see the rural side of the Amalfi Coast!

Emerald Grotto (Conca Dei Marini)

The Emerald Grotto, a famous attraction in the Amalfi Coast, is located in the town of Conca Dei Marini. From the main road, we went down through an elevator down to the sea. We went on a boat inside this small cave near the coast. The stone formations were not extraordinary but the emerald water below was quite interesting. The water seemed to sparkle. According to the guide, there is an underground hole in that grotto were the light comes from. He then tapped the water with the paddle several times, it looked like fireworks!

Although we wanted to go further to see the other towns such as Amalfi, Ravello and Salerno, we were only able to go to three of the coastal towns in this area since the road headed to these towns was under repair and the buses didn’t go any further.

Amalfi coast is one of the most stunning places we’ve been and the scenery is really romantic. We were only there for two days but that was enough time to leave us captivated by its natural charm. We promised we’d come back, and next time we’re staying there for a night or two.

How to Get to the Amalfi Coast from Naples:

Amalfi coast can easily be done via a day trip from Naples. Naples was not a particularly charming city (but the food was good) but it’s a good base for this trip since it’s cheap. We also did day trips towards Herculeneum and Pompeii from there. From the Napoli Central Station (Napoli-Garibaldi) take the Circumvesuviana railway line towards Sorrento, which is the last stop. Just outside the train station in Sorrento, you can find the SITA Buses, which go to the towns in Amalfi. You can check the timetables for the Circumvesuviana Railway and SITA Bus below. Make sure to keep a copy on hand, since there are no timetables in the bus stops.
