Nothing quite compares to the rugged scenery on New Zealand’s West Coast. Our recent road trip to this part of the South Island took us to some of the country’s most delightful places with its tantalizing mountain views, glaciers and waterfalls. There is a lot to see and each day can get very busy. Don’t you just hate it when you’re on holiday and barely have time to relax? To have that balance between adventure and relaxation, we capped our time to the West Coast with a dip in a private hot pool at Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools.

A Soothing Escape – A Private Hot Pool Experience

Set in a lush rainforest enclave, a private hot pool was exactly what we needed after a busy two days of exploring the West Coast. Jon and I were so thrilled to finally relax after the long drive, the long walks and the chilly weather at the glaciers. Our private pool area was perfect. The landscape was so natural with lush greenery and wood elements. The hot pool, which could easily fit four people, resembled a rock formation. The water was also at the perfect temperature to soothe our aching muscles. It was so beautiful, we could have stayed there for hours. If you’re looking for a romantic escape, it’s definitely a great spot. Another plus side to the private pool experience was having own cabana (changing room/bathroom and shower). There are three private pools:

  • Te Wai Whakahaumanu (The reviving waters)
  • Te Wai Whakawai (The easing waters)
  • Te Wai Taurima (The tending waters)

A private pool session, costs $95 for two people ($15 for additonal people) and lasts for 45 minutes. After which, you can continue to enjoy your time in the facility with their three main pools.

Apart from the three private pools, Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools also feature three main pools set in similar natural surroundings. It’s easy to forget your worries with such relaxing scenery. The three main pools are varying temperatures, between 36 and 40 degrees centigrade:

  • Te Puna Mahaki (The pool of calmness),
  • Te Puna Makoha (The pool of tranquillity)
  • Te Puna Marino (The pool of serenity)

We tried all three pools and found the 40 degree pool the most soothing. It wasn’t very busy either so it was a great extension to our visit. Changing rooms and locker facilities are available close to these main pools. The women’s facilities even had hairdryers which was very useful. The staff at Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools were also very accommodating.

Adult single entry starts at $28 into the public pools. They also offer other packages which include spa and sauna services.
