The weather wasn’t great when our night bus arrived to Puerto Varas. The dark clouds kept the famous volcanoes away from our view and the rain made our walk to our accommodation difficult. It wasn’t going well, until the doors of The Guest House opened for us. The cozy atmosphere of the former mansion immediately made us fall in love with it. In a small town like Puerto Varas, this is certainly the kind of place you want to be in. There was even a wooden fire place in the living room which kept everything nice and warm. Josefina, the owner welcomed us with hugs and showed us to our beautiful room. It almost felt like being home.
Rooms and Amenities
The Guest House was originally designed as a town house, a large mansion known as the House Kortmann in the 1920s. In 1999, its purpose was renewed as a bed and breakfast. The Guest House offers 9 bedrooms with private bathrooms. We stayed in charming double room with garden view. The design of the room was a mix of modern and vintage with its high ceiling, beddings and crochet side pieces. There are also interesting decorations from decades ago that truly capture the heritage of the former mansion. There are two living rooms, one for each floor of the house and a common dining room where breakfast is served.
A Delicious Breakfast
The manjar crepes for breakfast are perfect to start the day! We loved manjar (milk caramel sauce) since we encountered this dessert sauce in Peru. When served on a crepe, it is just delicious! For breakfast, we also had bread, butter and jam; ham and cheese; granola, fruits and yogurt; tea and coffee. For the next day, we had French toast! It’s been a while since we last had this too. We really enjoyed the breakfast in The Guest House.
Management and Staff
The management and staff of The Guest House were like family. They provided great service and helped whenever possible. They assisted us well during the time that we had to confirm our check in time for the ferry in Puerto Montt.
Location: Puerto Varas in Chile’s Lake District
The Guest House is located near the centre of Puerto Varas, one of the towns in the Lake District of Chile. The Guest House is walking distance to the Sagrado Corazón de Jesus Church and Lake Llanquihue, where you can witness the beautiful sight of Volcan Osorno. Puerto Varas is also the gateway to Parque Nacional Vicente Perez Rosales, where you can visit the Saltos de Petrohue, take a boat ride on Lago de Todos los Santos and get close to Volcan Osorno.
Puerto Varas is less than an hour away from Puerto Montt. We decided to stay in Puerto Varas considering that it’s a more interesting town and there are more activities nearby. If you are headed towards Puerto Montt, don’t miss out on the beautiful town of Puerto Varas and of course, make sure to stay at this lovely bed and breakfast.
